Have just returned from a trip taking in the major Roman sights in Libya. Overall a first class holiday. The people were very friendly and the trip was faultless, mainly due to our excellent Tour escort and the allocated Tourism Police representative.
We stopped in the newly opened El Khan hotal in the Tripoli Old Town, good location and spotlessly clean. The breakfasts were good, not the extensive buffet you get in large hotels but perfectly adequate, not complaint at all.
The swimmiming pool was not available as we were one week to early for its opening. Also to be added is a restaurant. However there is an excellent restaurant 5 minutes walk away by the Marcus Aurilus Arch. Good to sit overlooking the arch whilst eating you dinner. The food was very good. The local guide around the Antiquity sites was Yousef al Khattali, spoke very good english and had a very good knowledge, as well as an anglo sense of humour. The sites are the highlight and unspoilt, however it is essential you have a local guide to get the most out of a visit, Libya is new to tourism so hardly any signage.
The only issue we had on the trip was a late change of hotel at our second location, which was totally unacceptable to which our Tour escort concurred , within an hour our Tour escort and goverment representative had found alternative accommodation which was again an excellent 4 star hotel. Overall we found the food good, our Tour escort was very particular where he recommended as a result no illness at all in in the group. Internal flights were good, however do not expect Airports to be equivalent to those in founds in developed tourist destinations, manage your expectations.
Would recommend Libya as a tour destination if interested in Roman ruins, but do remember this is a totally dry country. Noted in a previous review posted by a member to Libya that experiences were not good, our experiences were the total opposite. I love the cities of Tripoli and in particular those in the old city of Tripoli and the museum and the wonderful atmosphere and the sea breeze I would advise everyone to visit the beautiful cities and it's really between the city streets, carrying all that is old and heritage and the beautiful and reminds you of things that have happened a long time ago For more information or any person who wishes to visit any assistance would not be late Greetings Ola.
