First, I examine the role of neoliberalism in generating uneven development in New Zealand over the last three decades. Since , the coalition government has attempted to address the negative social and economic impacts of neoliberal approaches, such as regional inequalities in the country by establishing a new Minister of Regional Economic Development and an Independent Advisory Panel IAP , as well as allocating a Provincial Growth Fund PGF.
I argue that these government institutions and investments are crucial to addressing the existing regional underdevelopment in New Zealand. However, the suggested contestable regional development model is inherently unable to recognize the capacities and problems of regions. I finally suggest the utilization of a country planning mechanism to address the historic uneven-regional development in New Zealand.
ABSTRACT : Studies of the spatial management of urban marginality emphasise the pre-eminent role of formal regulation in confining marginal populations, whether overtly or covertly. However, relatively little is known about informal mechanisms in the context of the global North, and the interaction between state-based regulation and these informal practices.
This paper addresses these relative absences. Through a case study of Christchurch, New Zealand, we discuss how an ambiguous regulatory environment, combined with highly localised understandings of spatial appropriateness, led to and influenced the informal management of sex work through a community-level partnership between local authorities, residents and sex worker advocates.
